Giles Whitehead

Giles Whitehead grew up on a farm in Tenterden, Kent. He has been creating art from his early childhood — making objects and pictures between farm chores and schoolwork. He trained at the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone (now the University for the Creative Arts). He has been publicly exhibiting his work since his first solo exhibition in 1991.
Giles is interested in the more quirky aspects of life. He uses evocative colours, textures and worn surfaces to create thought-provoking and humorous pieces, often painting on and sculpting in wood. He says of his work, “I want to make art that’s precious, but also something that one can feel comfortable with; something that should be handled. An art that is of today, but also that has a sense of history.”

In 2008 he set up Unit Radio: an initiative that enables young people with speech and language needs to create radio shows.
