lemons and oranges

Lemons and Oranges

When looking through the train window, moving through the Sicily countryside, I noticed the abundant lemons in the trees, hanging, saturated yellow, in the sun. As a stranger I asked for directions and pointed at a map. Many people tried to help but nobody knew of a bus stop, so a kind lady gave me a lift and an armful of oranges.

I was in Cefalu, a medieval town, between the Madonie Mountains and the sea - a place busy with scooters, steps, sand, stones, boats, fish and net-menders. I meandered narrow streets, with sketchbook and camera, soaking in all the sights. I cooled my feet in the bluest sea and sat in the shade to bite into the reddest, richest tomatoes imaginable…

It was the colours of the coastal town of Cefalù in Sicily that inspired my thoughts whilst creating the prints, paintings and sculptures for this exhibition.
